Fred Schaefer was Dallas’ top high school sprinter in 1957 in both public and private school competition and was considered one of the state’s top track stars. He was the first Jesuit and TCIL athlete to win a medal at the Texas Relays. At the inaugural TCIL State Track Meet, he won first place in all 5 events in which he competed and led Jesuit to a first place team finish. Upon graduation he accepted a full athletic track scholarship to SMU. Fred subsequently transferred to East Texas State University where he became a nationally recognized sprinter finishing no worse than third place in all national sprint championships during his collegiate career. He ran on relay teams that won first place at the Texas Relays, Drake Relays, and Kansas Relays for 3 straight years.
