DAN MURPHY, class of 1971, is one of Dallas’ high schools’ “All-Time” trackman, Discus throwers.  For nearly 60 years no Jesuit athlete has bettered the distance marks of Carl Pellegrini, class l961, and Dan Murphy, class l971.

Dan set new discus distance records in meet after meet…Prairie Relays, Sulphur Springs, Ennis Relays, as well as other meets. I can not think of anyone that might have bettered those records over the past 30 years. He Held the 4A Division highly competitive Jesuit-Sheaner Relays discus record for 27 years, from 1971 to 1999.

In 1970, he won his fist TCIL championship in the discus as he helped the Rangers win the state track meet that year.  The following year as co-captain of the track team, Dan was ranked the number one discus thrower in the state of Texas among all public and private schools and 10th in the nation.  In 1971 he repeated as TCIL state discus champion.

Dan attended the US Navel Academy where he lettered all four years as the Academy's top discus thrower. He continued his winning ways after high school including a 2nd place finish in the 1973 1C4A track meet, 3rd at the 1973 Penn Relays and winning the Ivy League conference discus championship in 1975.

Dan Murphy demonstrated a winning, superior athletic ability while in high school at Dallas Jesuit, helping Jesuit win numerous track meets and win the TCIL State Meet Track Championship, and after his graduation he continued to do so at the collegiate level.

Dan Murphy, class 1971, is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, a Navy Commander Ret., a former navy flight instructor, and a former Commanding Officer of a United States Training Base. He served in the anti-submarine arena, earning designations as both an Anti Submarine Warfare and a Naval Training Specialist.
