CLIFTON MURRAY, class of 1979, was captain and MVP of the track & field team his senior year. Clifton set the Jesuit 100m dash school record in 1979 with a time of 10.5, a record that has remained unbeaten the past 24 years. He broke the previous record set 22 years earlier, by hall of famer - Fred Schaefer, in 1957. Clifton set two school records during senior year: 100m – 10.5 and High Jump – 6’4”. After a “breakout” meet in Azle, where he won 4 individual events - 100m, 200m, High Jump and Long Jump - Clifton received a call from University of Texas coach Blackburn and was offered a scholarship. Clifton competed 3 years for UT in the old Southwest Conference and ran with greats such as Johnny Lam Jones, Johnny Hector and Olympians Mike Connelly & Carl Lewis. Clifton was also captain and MVP of the basketball team during his senior year earning All-District honors.
