    By DEREK RAY JOHNSON The
Garland boys track team won the 44th annual Jesuit-Sheaner
Relays last Saturday after finishing the event with 72 points, which was
good enough to top a strong field of 35 teams. Once
again it was Garland’s speed that vaulted them to an overall first place
finish as the Owls dominated in the 100 meter and 200 meter individual
races as well as the team relays in both of those events. Jarrett
Ben and Alex Williams proved they were the fastest men on the track on
Saturday when they ran to a photo finish in the 100 as both took first and
second place. Ben won the 100 with a time of 10.74 seconds, which was only
one-one hundredth of a second faster than Williams, who finished in second
with a time of 10.75 seconds. Garland
picked up another first place finish when Jacques Caldwell sprinted his
way to a to a winning time of 21.63 seconds in the 200 then the Owls
continued their recent dominance in the 4x100 and 4x200 team relays. Ben,
Caldwell, Williams and Keith Blanton teamed up to run past the rest of the
field in the 4x100 with a winning time of 41.81 seconds then sprinted to
another first place finish when they blew past the competition in the
4x200 in just one minute and 28.06 seconds. Garland’s
performance in the speed events was more than enough to clinch the meet as
they finished 12 points ahead of Southlake Carroll, who finished in second
      place. The
Owls also fared well in some of the other events such as the High Jump
where Quincy Ford finished fifth, while teammate Branden Wright placed 12th
      overall. Devin
White jumped to a fifth place finish in the Long Jump with a leap of
20-06.50 feet then followed up with a ninth place showing in the Triple
      Jump. Garland
also came up with a respectable finish in the 4x400 team relay when Mieko
Turner, Malcolm Davis, Demarcus Crabtree and Blanton ran to an eighth
place time of three minutes and 44.59 seconds. |
